Chairman’s Update – November 2019

Dear Members of the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society.

Welcome to the latest edition of the newsletter!

Society AGM

Our Annual General Meeting was held on Monday the 4th November 2019 at the Royal Oak in Ockbrook.

We had an excellent attendance of 40 members and guests.  All existing officers and committee members stood down but once again, with a couple of changes, all have offered to re-stand. Chris our treasurer has decided to step down and he has been replaced by a new treasurer, Derek, both will work together until our financial year end. Another change is to our membership secretary, Roger has offered his services on our engineering team, he is being replaced by our existing committee member Gary, again,  both will work together for a period of time to ensure a smooth handover.  One final change is that Jackie has asked to stand down from the booking of our speakers, however she has kindly agreed to continue covering our social media. Eileen has offered to take over the booking role. Many thanks to all mentioned for the wonderful work done for us in the past. All other officers have been re-elected in their existing roles and I thank them for their support.

If you feel that you would like to help in any way, please get in touch and come along to a meeting.

Extreme Gardening

Extreme gardening is back, now the grass cutting season is out of the way it is time for us to start using our shredder on various sites. And no, he has not got his head in the shredder.

Student Support

Extra help from three second year students at Nottingham Trent University studying Building Surveying. Emily, Roxie and Rebecca joined us for a day at the cottages and have stated an interest in coming back. It is great to see the youngsters getting stuck in with the rest of the team. More help is always appreciated and we can even offer team days out for local firms if anyone is interested, please get in touch.

Our last picture for this month is one of our trip boat under construction in a local boat yard. We are looking for a launch in the spring of next year on the River Derwent. There have been several people showing an interest in helping us to crew the boat and we will not turn anyone away, please get in touch for more details.

Here’s to another busy year.

Regards

Eddy – Chairman
