Chairman’s Report – October 2018

Dear Members of the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society,

Welcome to edition number two of the new format newsletter, feed-back has been positive, with a few suggestions to help us move forward with spreading the word in a more up to date method.
Work at the newly acquired land in Sandiacre is progressing with Keith and his small group aiming to reach Bostocks Lane by Christmas, the aim is to get this stretch back under control and hence make next year’s work easier when things start to grow again.

Borrowash is looking good under David’s control, the bottom lock is coming into its own, why not pop down and have a look next time you are in the area. Feedback from the WRGiEin group that helped us the summer indicates that they are looking to come back next year to help us finish this stretch back to Station Road, including some work on moving the sewage pipes that are sitting in the wrong place.

Picture on the right shows summer work at Borrowash on the Bottom Lock. The sewer pipe is located to the right of the photograph.

We are also looking to take over the stretch of land from Station Road heading towards Derby, this will mean more extreme gardening over the winter so any help on a Wednesday would be great.

Do you remember the picture of the Draycott rooftop shown in the last edition?

This is what it looks like now, the roofers are on site and the slates have been raised to the top of the scaffolding, this has been an amazing piece of work by Scott and his team of helpers to reach the deadlines given.

Once the first section is complete we can look to move the scaffold and start work on phase 2. Again this will involve a massive amount of volunteer hours so each and every hour given means so much to us.

Planning application has also been submitted to the relevant authorities for the dig-out in the early part of next year, more details will follow on this important mile stone in getting water back.

Our Annual General Meeting is in October, on the 23rd at the Wilmott Arms, starting at 7.30pm, all are welcome.

Regards,

Eddy – Chair.
