Biodiversity
Volunteers from the Canal Society and students from a local school have already planted over 15,000 new trees.
The Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust has a Biodiversity Policy which mirrors that of British Waterways.
This broadly encourages the restoration and use of waterways whilst protecting existing wildlife sites and taking the opportunity to create new ones.
The Trust has commissioned an Environmental Scoping Report and an Environmental Opportunities Report. It has done a Phase 1 Ecological Survey of the whole canal route and sees it as a responsibility to carry out the same if the river is used for boats.
The Trust has expressed commitment to work with organisations such as Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and Groundwork Erewash Valley and has already worked on some projects together.
Our membership section, The Derby & Sandiacre Canal Society has nearly 1,500 members. People have joined for many different reasons, one being the interest in wildlife. Should the river be returned to navigation; the volunteers are ready to work in co-operation with the EA and the wildlife organisations. The protection of wildlife sites and the creation of new opportunities would be an essential part of any project and would be included for funding.
