Canal Route
The object of both the Trust and the Society is to restore the former Derby Canal as a navigable through waterway from the Erewash Canal at Sandiacre, to the Trent & Mersey Canal at Swarkestone via central Derby as close as possible to the original route. Thus completing a 25-mile circular route.
The aims of the Derby & Sandiacre Canal Society are to support and encourage the Trust wherever possible by raising funds, organising events, publicity and other activities to promote the restoration and subsequent operation of the Derby & Sandiacre Canal. They also organise regular working parties and arrange social activities on behalf of the members.
Derby is one of the few cities in the UK not enjoying the commercial, economic, employment, environmental, leisure and quality of life benefits by being on the NATIONAL waterways map.
The benefits will also be felt in the Borough of Erewash and in South Derbyshire District.
